Technical Deep Dive: The ARRI ALEXA 35 Xtreme

Technical Deep Dive: The ARRI ALEXA 35 Xtreme

At Camalot, we are constantly updating our inventory with tools that solve real-world production challenges. The ARRI ALEXA 35 Xtreme is the latest evolution of the ALEV-4 platform. While it maintains the industry-leading image quality of the standard ALEXA 35, it introduces a significant leap in processing power and high-speed capabilities.

What is the “Xtreme” Difference?

The ALEXA 35 Xtreme is built on the same 4.6K Super 35 sensor but features a new high-performance processor and an enhanced cooling system. Visually, the camera is identical to the standard model except for the “Xtreme” branding on the camera-right side and taller antennas for improved WiFi/ECS range.

The primary advantage of the Xtreme is its ability to handle massive data rates and high frame rates without the need for a dedicated specialty high-speed camera, maintaining a consistent ARRI workflow and color science across the entire production.

Key Hardware & Software Upgrades

1. High-Speed Performance & Sensor Overdrive

The Xtreme’s new processor allows for frame rates that were previously impossible on a standard ALEXA body.

  • Standard Mode: Up to 330 fps in 4.6K with full 17-stop dynamic range.

  • Sensor Overdrive: Up to 660 fps in 2K (Super 16 crop).

  • Consistency: Because it uses the same ALEV-4 sensor, your high-speed shots will perfectly match your 24fps footage in terms of color, texture, and latitude.

2. ARRICORE Codec

The camera introduces ARRICORE, a next-generation compressed RGB codec.

  • It provides the same flexibility as RAW (allowing post-production adjustments to exposure, white balance, and tint).

  • It functions at a data rate similar to ProRes 4444, making it significantly more efficient for high-speed capture than uncompressed RAW, without sacrificing image integrity.

3. Extended Pre-Recording Buffer

For documentary and action shooters, the pre-record buffer has been increased 5x compared to the original ALEXA 35.

  • In HD, the camera can buffer up to 5 minutes of footage.

  • This allows operators to trigger the recording after the action has occurred, ensuring critical moments are never missed.

4. Power and Thermal Efficiency

Despite the increased processing power, the Xtreme is 10% more power-efficient.

  • New internal electronics and a vertical cooling path reduce heat buildup.

  • Lower power draw means longer runtimes on standard B-Mount batteries, a critical factor for remote locations or long shooting days.
